December 25, 1937 - December 15, 2020

On Tuesday, December 15, 2020, Gijsbert (Gus) Veenendaal, our dear husband, father and grandfather, was called Home by his Lord and Saviour at the age of 82 years.

Gus was born in Leusden, the Netherlands to Gijsbertus and Aalbertha Veenendaal on December 25, 1937. He immigrated to Canada with his parents and siblings in 1956, and settled in the Homewood area. In 1966 Gus moved to Ontario, and the following year he married Frederika (Freddie) VanSydenborgh. In 1979 they decided to move back to Carman where he was employed at Vanderveen’s Greenhouses. They purchased a small acreage where Gus was able to enjoy his love for farming, animals, and gardening for many years.

Together Gus and Freddie were blessed with five children, Alan (Colleen) Veenendaal, Jeanette (Ronald) Werkman, Aileen (Jason) Raap, Carole (Mark) Vanderveen, and John (Miranda) Veenendaal, as well as 24 grandchildren who brought Gus much joy. He will be missed by his family, including his brothers (in-law) and sisters (in-law) across Canada, and his many nieces and nephews.

Family was very important to Gus, and he always showed a keen interest in what each of his children and grandchildren were doing. As a family, we are thankful to God for the blessing Gus was to us, and for instilling in us a love for our Heavenly Father. In all things, he reminded us often that everything is in the Lord’s hands. This was such a comfort for us after he suffered the effects of a stroke during the last few weeks of his earthly life.

Our sincere thank you goes to the medical staff at Health Sciences Centre and Boundary Trails Health Centre, who went above and beyond in caring for Gus. For those who wish, a donation may be made to Boundary Trails Health Centre, Hwy 3 and Manitoba 14, Winkler MB, R6W 1H8.
