Eunice Kathleen (Mowbray) Ireland (Nee Wier)

Born August 6, 1920 - Died December 20, 2019

Mom’s 99 years were filled with joy and adventure. She was born in Winnipeg, MB on August 6, 1920 to Robert George and Kathleen Weir. She attended Grosvenor, Robert H. Smith, Kelvin and           St. Mary’s Academy Schools. Upon graduating high school, Mom enrolled at Success Business College and went on to work in the office at Success. In the office she was responsible for the student accounts and enrolment. Mom then went to work for Western Grain in the Grain Exchange until 1946.

During World War II Mom joined the Winnipeg Woman’s Air Force Auxiliary. The group met troop trains and provided lunch for them. There was a meeting hall for the troops near Eatons on Donald Street where they would visit and enjoy lunch. Mom also worked at the Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic.

She met A.E. (Ed) Mowbray in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They married February 8, 1946 and moved to the farm in Roland, MB. Mom adapted well to life on the farm, learning how to help with the many activities on a mixed farm. Their daughter Lynn was born in 1947 and son Doug was born in 1951.

When Mom came to Roland she was a member of the Esforad Rebekah Lodge, Bethel District Club as well the Roland United and Bethel Churches.

On our farm we had horses. Both Lynn and Doug joined the Roland Canter Club. Mom was a leader as well as Wes Phillips and Frank Wiebe. The highlight of those years was a 1967 Centennial Trail Ride to Winnipeg, including a parade down Main Street and Broadway to the Legislature.

Mom is fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure to know her. She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren very much. Many hours were spent on the phone with her grandchildren and great grandchildren to check in on them and make sure they never forgot how much she loved them (and worried about them).

One of Mom’s fondest memories were her trips to Alberta. One to Erin and Mike’s Wedding near Jasper and two trips to Fort McMurray. In 2016 she visited Fort McMurray just prior to the fire, spending time with Mike, Erin and Brooke. She also found out she would be a Great Grandma again with Bodhi on the way.

All the family has fond memories of Eunice (Mowbray) Ireland. Especially her great smile and kind words.

Mom died peacefully on December 20, 2019. with family by her side. She was predeceased by husbands Ed Mowbray and Cliff Ireland and grandson Patrick Mowbray, as well as brothers Robert “Bobby” Weir, Gordon Weir and sister in law Margaret Weir. Survived by daughter, Lynn (John) Blatta of Aubigny MB. Son Doug (Diane) Mowbray of Roland MB. Grandson, David Blatta (Terry Lynn McPhee) Great Grandchildren Kristen, Jessica, Rachelle and Nicole Blatta of Winnipeg MB. Grandson Jim Blatta (Sonya Muraro) Great Grandchildren Kate, Sarah and Jared Blatta of Winnipeg MB. Granddaughter Erin (Mike) Haberoth and Great Grandchildren Brooke and Bodhi of Fort McMurray, AB.
