With sadness, we announce the passing of Vera Emily Colvin, aged 99 years, dearly beloved wife of Carman Colvin on August 16, 2019 at the Carman Memorial Hospital, Carman, MB.

Daughter of Jennie and Fred Nelson of the Brigdenley district near Homewood, MB, Vera was born in the family home on August 9, 1920.  She was the second child and oldest daughter of the family.   She received her education at Brigdenley School.  Prior to her marriage to Carm on February 3, 1942, Vera was employed in Winnipeg and the Carman area, for local farm families, and as a cook at the Carman Hospital, theatre cashier and a waitress at several restaurants.  Later, she and her husband owned and operated the Carman Cleaners until 1970.  She then worked again at local restaurants and the Carman Hospital, retiring in 1983.

Vera is survived by her loving husband of 77 years, Carman; her daughters Elaine Ganske and Lynda and Doug Michie, and son Fred and Phyllis Colvin; grandchildren Pamela Ganske and Tim Dowell, Carman and Deeann Ganske, Jodie Ganske and Ted Gross; Shelly and Trevor Juby, Brent and Danielle Michie, Carly and Clarke Deacon; Caddie and Patrick Crampton, Brooke and Justyn Pisa, Andrew Colvin and Mélissa Tovar, Grant and Rebecca Colvin; and eighteen great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sister Thelma McDougall and many nieces and nephews.  Vera is predeceased by her parents, brother Wilfred (Marjorie) Nelson, sisters Beatrice (Les) Dunn, Winnie (Everett) Whitfield, Jean (Ron) Macri, son-in-law Raymond Ganske and brothers in law Tom (Verna) Colvin, Fred Colvin, and Russ McDougall.

Except for a few months during the war when Vera and Carm lived in Kingston, ON, Vera lived and worked in the Carman area.  Following the war, Vera and Carm resided in town, before relocating in 1952 to a property on the Carman west road where they raised their family.  In 1993 they moved into the Riverview Legion Place where Vera lived until her passing.

Vera was a vibrant active person who loved life and delighted in the people around her.  She worked selflessly for the benefit of her family and community.   Forever young at heart, Vera was a friend of people of all ages.  Vera enjoyed  socializing, bowling, curling, camping, sewing, gardening, bingo, cooking and baking.   She was a 71 year member of the Carman Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Most important of all, Vera loved her family.   She was a wonderful  wife and mother.  She made a lasting impression on her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and countless others.  Vera and Carm danced together for eight decades!  She was a beautiful person in every way.    All of us will miss her dearly.

The family would like to thank the many health care workers and friends and neighbours who provided so much support for Mom and our family during the last several weeks of her life.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 23rd, 2:00 p.m. at the Carman United Church with the Reverend Lynn Sanderson officiating.  Interment will take place in the Greenwood Cemetery, Carman.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Carman Legion Ladies Auxiliary or to a charity of one’s choice.
