Margaret KAREN Owen (Gray)

May 28, 1942-July 12, 2019

With great sadness, the family announces the peaceful passing of a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Karen Owen passed away at the Carman Hospital at the age of 77 in the early evening of July 12, 2019, after many years battling a medical condition.

She has left behind many memories for her husband of 58 years Ron, their children Stephen (Doris), Brenda (Bob) and Michael, brother George (Noreen) Gray, sister in-law Judy Owen and brother in-law Jim Owen.

To share those memories, were the most treasured loves of her life, her grandchildren. Roxanne (Brent) Kotelko, Janine Owen (Jared), Michelle Owen (Neal) and Tiffany Owen, her O’Brien grandchildren Troy (Taylor), Mitchell and Taya as well as Jessica (Garry) Knaggs and Justin Owen (Kenna).

Also of great pride was what she referred to as here grand-baby explosion! Kylie and Brinley Kotelko, Bodhi Blatz and Grayson and Lachlin Knaggs.

She also leaves nieces and nephews – all of whom were her favorites, as well as many lifelong friends.

She was predeceased by son in-law Patrick O’Brien, sister in-law Linda Owen and brother in-law Lyall Owen.

Karen was born in Carman May 28, 1942 to Hector and Wilma Gray. She married the love of her life Ronald Owen on June 17, 1961.

Together they raised their 3 children on the home farm in Graysville. There were many hours of cutting grass, gardening, making meals, planting trees and all the things that were synonymous with living the farm life, which she loved.

She was personally involved in all of her kid’s sports and community events at whatever level they wanted to pursue. She was a 4H leader and volunteered on many boards and committees to be sure her kids were able to participate with any team or group they wanted to try.

She also golfed and curled for many years. Curling, of course, was a right of passage for every farm family and our family was no exception.

After leaving the farm they built a home in Graysville, from which she started a new chapter working at Aubin’s Nurseries, Manitoba Agriculture and with the Department of Highways. A few years in Graysville they then moved to Carman where she began to pursue a few of her favorite pass times. Although there were not many outside of her family that knew, she was a very talented artist. She would hand draw reproductions of photos and created amazing water color and oil canvas paintings that will now become family heirlooms.

But her true focus became the grand-children which started to appear shortly thereafter.

How she loved to follow them, literally, in everything they did. Her second round of figure skating, hockey and baseball and some new adventures like gymnastics.

She planned their social life around when and where the grandkids were going to be next.

She was an advocate for her family in every aspect of the word. She made sure they were given every possible opportunity no matter what the cause, even if it meant SHE had to fight for it!

And when it came to the grandkids, she let nothing stand in the way of their successes, always offering to escort them to all their events whether here or provinces away. She was at every arena and ball park you can name. There may not be a referee or umpire in Pembina Valley that didn’t know her voice!

She was always there for her family no matter the crisis or celebration. We will miss that immensely. We will miss her immensely.
