Dorothy Irene Bird

Dorothy passed away June 6, 2019 at the Boundary Trails Health Centre with family at her side.

Born to Richard and Elizabeth McCaffrey on February 3, 1922 at the Jordan farm.  Mom was the middle child of three.  A sister to Earl and Harold.  She attended New Haven school.  On May 6, 1942, she married Stanley George Bird.  For the first four years, Dad was in the Air Force.  They lived at Fort McLeod, AB where Joyce was born on February 1943.  They moved to Souris MB where Lyle was born on November 1944.  In 1945 Mom and Dad and their young family moved back to Mom’s Grandparents family farm.  She resided there until her 96th year.  In 1952 Ivan arrived.  In 1956 Patricia was born.  This completed their family.  Mom was dad’s helpmate with all the chores, milking and looking after beef cattle, chickens, turkeys and pigs.  Mom also drove the school bus when dad couldn’t.  Mom loved and excelled at feeding every one that came through their door.  If you went home hungry it was your own fault.  The salesmen soon learned to drop in just before meal time, knowing there was always enough for one more.

When Mom was young she enjoyed skating and often talked about all the fun she had, had going by bobsled to the pond or local homemade rink.  Every so often the skaters would bring 10 cents and have a wiener roast.  Mom hand quilted many beautiful quilts, sewed most of her kids clothes, tatted, crafts, gardening and looking after her many beautiful flowers.  She also loved to knit, which she did right to the very end.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband Stan, brother Earl and wife Dorothy, brother Harold, son Ivan and grandson-in-law Steve.  She is survived by daughter Joyce (Ron) Hickey, Kevin (Kathy), Barb (Scott) Lucas; Son Lyle (Cheri) Linda Ens, Stephen (Melanie), Susie (Don) Schwartz, Kerri Bird; Daughter-in-law Judy Bird, Jason (Megan), Brian (Sara), Darlene (Paul) Follis; Daughter Pat (Brent) Smith, Julie.  She is also survived by seventeen great grandchildren.

Mom enjoyed all her family and took a great interest in each one.  She always wanted to know how everyone was and what and how they were doing.  She always looked forward to all our family gatherings and the time spent together.  She enjoyed her many friendships that she made throughout her life and church community. Thanks to all those that visited her so faithfully.  She really enjoyed and looked forward to those visits.  We would also like to thank the Home Care Workers that assisted in enabling her to stay in her own home, on the farm into her 96th year.  In August of 2018 Mom moved to the personal care home in Manitou.  We really appreciate the excellent care given to Mom.
