Verna Gene (Hill) MacLean

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Moms passing, January 18, 2019. Mom was born 4 July, 1924 and grew up in the small town of Lyleton, Manitoba. She was the chosen daughter of Fred and Winnie Hill. Mom helped on the farm delivering milk and eggs, taught piano and sang in church choirs. Her ambition was to become a school teacher but that was short lived when her mother got sick and she returned home to help on the farm. She met and married Dad in 1945 and shared a life together for 53+ years. She was always “Dad's right hand man”! The poem by Siera Shea “So God Made a Farmers Wife" must have been written about Mom as she was all of that from cooking, cleaning, sewing, shopping, gardening, running with meals, greasing the machinery, driving tractors and hauling grain. Winter time found them both at the curling rink and in later years watching it on tv as she sat with a jigsaw puzzle, knitting , quilting or some craft on the go. When cancer took her thumb, that didn’t stop her from still doing all the crafts she loved. This past year, she knit mitts, scarves, hats and small afghans for Siloam Mission. Gardening was always a passion and could hardly wait for the snow to melt so she could get on the John Deere garden tractor and “work the back 40"! Her little dog Brandi also gave her much companionship. In 2016, Mom moved to Carman, Mb to be close to family and lived in her apartment at Legion Lodge being very independent.

Mom will be remembered by her daughter Heather (Wayne) Phillips of Carman, grandson Travis (Michelle) of Treherne, step granddaughter Kerri (Nick) Malazdrewicz, Luke and Beckett of Brandon. Sisters-in-law Anna Tibbett of Neepawa and Muriel Schaff of Yakima, Washington, half sisters Doris of Regina, Jean of Okotoks Ab,  Kathy of Swan River, half brother Don of Minnedosa and many nieces and nephews. And special friend and neighbor Joan Vanbeselaere of Melita.

A private family graveside service will be held sometime in spring (Moms favorite time of year) at Melita Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and cards, donations may be made to a charity of ones choice.

At this time, the family would like to thank everyone who sent flowers, cards and visited Mom. Also a big thank you to the tenants of Legion Lodge, and to Dr Atchison and the staff of Carman Memorial Hospital for their caring.
