Ruiter Gus web photoGus Ruiter

On October 31, Gijsbert Ruiter (Gus) was born to Maas and Leentje (Geldof) Ruiter. He was the oldest of four children, and grew up on a farm in Stoutenberg, the Netherlands. Farming post second world war was hard, and at the age of 18, he and his family immigrated to Canada in search of a better life. Life was hard, hoeing sugar beets, but Gus managed to make the best out of it, and even took an electrical maintenance course at Red River College. From there, he worked in Big Trout Lake Reservation, maintaining electrical and communications. It was at this time that he started to write to Henny, and six months later, flew back to the Netherlands to propose. They married in July, 1967. Five children were born, and life was busy, making a living at a mixed farm. Gus loved farm work, loved to drive his tractor, and loved to tinker. Life was not easy; Pop worked hard and lived a hard life as well. He was a very strong willed and determined man. Multiple accidents, as well as a heart attack proved as mere obstacles when he was determined to accomplish something, to the marvel of many.

Gus also had a very colourful character - just about everyone who has met him has a story to tell. Gus had this impact even on the nursing home staff, straight up till when God took him home.

Gus is predeceased by his parents, Maas and Leentje Ruiter (Geldof), and his wife, Henny Ruiter (Van Nykerk), and his brother, Peter Ruiter. He leaves to mourn his five children and their families, his sister Alice (Rollin) Wiebe, and his brother Corny (Shirley) Ruiter.

Funeral service will held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Canadian Reformed Church, Carman West.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Tabor Home.   Special thanks to those who have visited Pop in the last year of his life, the loving staff at Tabor Home, Dr. Pol, and the Doyle's Funeral Home Staff. Thank you to all who have reached out to us at this time.

Till we meet again, Pop. Tot ziens.
