Thomas “Hilton” Armstrong passed away at the Boyne Lodge in Carman on October 21, 2016.

Hilton was born June 9, 1937, to Stan and Isobel Armstrong of Carman. He was the eldest of their five children.

Hilton was raised in the farming district of St. Daniel NW of Carman. He attended a one-room school there until Grade 8, before going to Graysville School, but Hilton’s interest was always farming. He became a big part of mixed farming with his parents. In later years, he acquired land of his own and continued farming until 2008 when ill health caused him to quit. His interest was still there as he made many phone calls to his nephew, Steven, to see what was happening at the farm that day!

In his younger years, Hilton was a faithful member of Graysville 4-H. He took great pride throughout the year feeding and then showing his calf at the Carman Fair 4-H rally. For many years following this, he was a volunteer with the Dufferin Agricultural Society, being presented with their Volunteer Award in 2008.

Some of the other enjoyments of Hilton’s life were the trip he and his calf took on the train to the Toronto Royal Fair, participating in plowing matches, working with McEacherns at their potato shed, playing ball for the St. Daniel Woodticks, and his lifetime passion of curling.

Hilton was happy with a “no frills” lifestyle. He was a bachelor all his life, so became very independent. Losing his independence was difficult for him in his final years.   The family are very thankful to all the staff at the Boyne Lodge for their patience and understanding.

Hilton was predeceased by his Mom (1999) and his Dad (2002). Surviving him are his siblings; George (Emily), Jill (Ron) Adams, Stan (Nancy) and Murray. Hilton followed with interest, the activities of his ten nieces and nephews and their families.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at the Carman United Church. Interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery, Carman.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Hilton’s memory to The Boyne Lodge, Box 1644, Carman, MB, R0G 0J0 or to Carman Hospital Palliative Care, Box 610, Carman, MB , R0G 0J0.
