SEPTEMBER 24, 1924 – APRIL 3, 2015

The family of Mabel McKnight is saddened to announce her peaceful passing on April 3, 2015 at Carman Memorial Hospital. Mabel was born at the Old Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, the only daughter of Evelyn (Milne) and Ross Cook. She graduated from Transcona Central School Grade XI (1941), Grade XII at United College (1942), and then Provincial Normal School (1943).

Mabel taught at Homewood, MB 1943-45 and for a few months at John M. King in Winnipeg during fall of 1945.

On November 20, 1945 she married Harry McKnight and lived at Homewood on the family farm until 1950 when they moved to Roland where they resided for 53 years. She moved from the farm to Carman in October 2003.

Mabel was always involved in community. She was a life member of the United Church of Canada, a member of Esforad Rebekah Lodge #69 Roland, a member of Roland U.C.W. and Uptopia Ladies Organizations.

Mabel had a life long affair with music and song. She was leader of the Junior Choir at Roland United Church for 17 years and throughout her life performed as a soloist at many weddings and entertainments. She was a charter member of Sonatrice Singers (1973-2004).

Mabel was actively involved in the family businesses, McKnight Farms and A & M Soil Service. Later on she served on the boards of the Seniors Resource Council, Carman Area Foundation, Golden Prairie Arts Council, and volunteered at Boyne Lodge in Carman. Two of her favorite places to vacation were, Lake Armstrong at Redditt, ON and Kaanapali Beach on Maui.

Mabel is lovingly remembered and will be missed by her family: Bud (Heather), Ross (Sandy), Harry (Marty) and her grandchildren – Marla, Brooke, Adam, Ryan, Adrienne, Laurhys, Dayle, Emily, her 8 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mabel was predeceased by her husband Harry (1998), parents, Ross (1960) and Evelyn (1962), her brother, Ross (1961), and her sister-in-law, June Gislason (2014).

Mabel was a loving wife and mother, a caring friend to many, an energetic community supporter, and a wise experienced mentor. She faced life with courage. Our world was a better place because of her.

As per Mabel’s wishes, there will be no funeral. She felt her “Celebration of Life” was her 90th birthday party, held September 24, 2014 where she was able to enjoy the day with her many friends and family. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will follow at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Carman Area Foundation – Linear Grain Fund for Underprivileged Children, Box 160, Carman, MB R0G 0J0 or

During Mabel’s illness she often expressed gratitude for the caring people who looked after her. The family would like to thank all those involved in her care and friends who spent time with her.
