Orchard Edward orig photoEdward was born August 31, 1918 on the farm south of Deerwood, MB. He was the second son of Emma (Hickey) and William Orchard. He attended Deerwood School and farmed with his father until he joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp 5th Division. He served in Canada, England, Italy, Belgium and Holland attached to the 24th Field Ambulance. Edward was a proud “D-Day Dodger”. He returned from overseas in 1946 and resumed farming. In 1949, he married Catherine Madill and they took over the family farm where they resided until Ed entered hospital in November, 2014. Son Gordon was born in 1951 and daughter Patricia in 1953. Ed and Catherine celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary September 23, 2014.

Edward was involved in the Royal Canadian Legion for over 65 years and served as Secretary Treasurer and President of the Altamont Branch. He was also Zone Commander for years and he was tireless and committed in his duties toward helping fellow Legion Members.   November 11th was a particularly meaningful day for him every year. He and Catherine attended both WW 2 Liberation Anniversary celebrations in Holland and he proudly marched with his fellow Canadian Liberators. Ed served as a Cub and Scout leader for over 10 years. In his younger days, he loved to play baseball and hockey with local community teams and he and Catherine enjoyed watching hard ball at the Clearwater July 1st baseball tournaments. Ed was quiet and kind-hearted and he loved a good joke or story. He was an avid reader, especially books about early farming equipment and WW2.

Edward passed away February 15, 2015 at the Notre Dame Foyer having attained 96 years and almost 6 months of age.   He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Catherine, son Gordon (Karen), daughter Patricia (Dan) Steppler as well as six grandsons: David (Linda) Orchard, Evan (Gina) Orchard, Ian (Sandy) Steppler, Geoff (Sarah) Steppler, Adam (Amber) Steppler, and Andre (Katie) Steppler. He also leaves eleven great grandchildren: Lila, Fiona, Lincoln and Etta Orchard; Lori, Michael, April, Charlie, and Lea Steppler; and Brynn and Brayden Steppler. Edward is survived by one brother Warder Orchard, and two sisters Wilma Stewart and Nora McConnell as well as sisters and brother-in-law Doreen Storey, Ruth Haines, and June and Murray Stockford.   Edward was predeceased by infant great grandson Garrett Steppler (2014); sisters and brothers-in-law Amy and Gordon Armstrong, Alma and Art Dixon, and Rose and Norval Brooks; sisters-in-law Muriel Orchard and Marge Orchard; and brothers-in-law Tom Storey and Geordie Haines.
