Braun PhotoMary Braun (Toews)

Mary was born to William & Maria Toews on April 14, 1928 at Winkler, MB in an ‘old folks home’. She spent her childhood on the farm at Homewood, MB where she attended Hopeland School.
Sometime during her adolescent years she attended 2 years of Elim Bible School.
She was baptized upon the confession of her faith by Bishop David Schulz on June 14, 1946 at the Homewood Mennonite Church.
Mom and Dad’s courtship began when Mom was doing pastoral care for Grandpa Braun.
On October 21, 1951, Rev. D.D. Klassen officiated at the wedding ceremony between Peter Braun and Mary Toews. They shared more than 55 years together. They were blessed with 5 children during their time at Elm Creek – Mary Anne, David, Elizabeth, Bill and Lydia. Mom and Dad sold the farm and moved into Carman the summer of 1964. There Darlene joined the family.
When Mom was at home raising her children, she was very involved with church work such as the Sunday School Program, VBS, Ladies Aid, Church Council, Missions Committee and anything else she was asked to do. She ensured that there was always food on the table by growing huge gardens and canning endlessly throughout the summer months. Mom was a wonderful seamstress. She sewed many of her children’s clothes, especially for her girls. Her daughters always had new hand made dresses for Christmas and Easter. She also sewed all of her daughters’ baptism dresses and a couple of their wedding dresses. Mom worked for Harris Clothing Store ensuring that men in Carman were finely dressed with her alterations to their dress clothes. Mom enjoyed reading a good book and knitting as well. She made many an afghan for her grandchildren. Mom’s birthday phone calls were always appreciated. She ensured that her children and grandchildren received a phone call every birthday. Mom spent many hours memorizing Bible verses which were always a blessing to her in difficult times right until the time of her death.
Mom began working at the Boyne Lodge in 1979 and shortly after took a position at the Carman Hospital working in the kitchen and then in the laundry room. She retired at the age of 65 in 1993.
After her retirement Mom continued her service to the community by singing with her friends at the Boyne Lodge, providing pastoral care to the individuals and their families at the Boyne Lodge, and she also volunteered at the MCC thrift store for years.

Her husband, Peter Braun, died May 12th, 2007. She remained in their home of over 40 years for the next year and then moved to her apartment at the Parkview Manor in 2008. She lived there until she went to the Carman Memorial Hospital on October 21, 2013. In the hospital Mom and her family appreciated the wonderful care that the staff provided to her.
