Alfhild Jeannette Cochran
Suddenly at her residence on November 23, 2011 Alfhild Jeannette Cochran passed away at the age of 89.
Born August 12, 1922 to Robert and Annette Takvam, Alfhild was the eldest of five children. Growing up on a dairy farm she was accustomed to hard work, a trait which continued throughout her lifetime. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and travelled to Norway twice.
Music played an important role in Mom's life. It began early in her life singing duets with her sister Thelma at numerous events in the community. She was a member of the United Church choir and she was the leader of a Boy's Choir. She was a long time member of the Carman Community Band where she played alto horn, she sang with the Sonatrice Singers and enjoyed playing the organ.
Mother had many talents and enjoyed working with her hands. Her handiwork included knitting, sewing and painting. Some of her other interests were cooking, curling, bridge club and golf. She achieved a hole-in-one and won the Ladies Club Championship at Carman Golf Club.
She married Reid Cochran on October 30, 1941 and they raised 5 children. She worked at the family Optometry office. They spent every summer at the cabin at Willard Lake and after retirement they spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona.
Left to cherish her memory, son Robert (Rosalie), daughters Jane (Charles) Peckover, Karen (Grant) Laybourne and Leanne (Derk) Kiers. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, sister Solveig, brother Robert (Vina), sister-in laws Georgena and Lorraine and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Reid, sister Thelma, brother Kenneth, daughter Bonnie and grandson Jeffrey.
A private family graveside service will be held Saturday, December 3, 2011 with Rev. Harold Kenyon officiating. A public reception will be held at 2:30p.m. at the United Church Place for anyone wishing to visit the family.
