V. Grace Bruce

Verna Grace Bruce passed away on April 20th at Carman General Hospital just a few months shy of her 90th birthday.

She was predeceased by her husband, Hank. Grace is survived by her brother Don McEwan and her five children and their partners. She also leaves behind many grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as numerous nephews and nieces and great nephews and nieces.

Mom spent her years in small communities. In each community she was actively involved in the United Church. She loved being a choir member and in her younger years was often invited to sing at weddings, funerals and other special events. Over the years, she participated in a variety of women’s organizations. At the time of her passing, she still regularly attended Carman United Church and participated in pastoral care by writing cards and letters to people who were in hospital, shut-in or facing some kind of challenge. She loved what she called her “church family” at Carman United Church. Mom developed many skills out of necessity; she was a skilled seamstress, a wonderful cook and a baker. She had a green thumb and grew bountiful gardens. Mom was a “career mom”. Her first and foremost priority was always her family and making sure they were well taken care of. When the nest became empty, she opened her home to boarders, treating them as she would her family. Her home was always a warm and welcoming place. Mom’s unflinching love of family, her positive attitude, her gratitude, friendliness and unwavering faith made her an inspiration to many.

Mom loved Carman and the surrounding communities . Our family would like to extend thanks to all the people who showed special kindnesses to her; there are too many to name individually. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Carman Area Foundation Inc.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 25, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Carman United Church with Rev. Catherine Waldie and Rev. Harold Kenyon officiating. Interment in the Greenwood Cemetery.
