Delia Joan Power

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Delia Power of Carman, Manitoba on November 9, 2010 at BoundaryTrailsHospital near Morden/Winkler at the age of 59 years after a fourteen year battle with cancer. She is survived by husband Hellar Nakonechny of 35 years, children Alanna (married to Mike Esler, and grandchildren Lia, Ashton and Isabelle), of Slidell, Louisiana, Lauren (married to Derrick Chornomydz, and grandchildren Benjamin and Taylr) of Carman, Manitoba and Aaron (married to Sheena [Beaudin]) also of Carman, Manitoba, by siblings Marian Power of Ottawa, Ontario, Allyn Power (married to Doug Michael) of Okotoks, Alberta, Dawn Power (married to Guy Arbez and nieces Lise, Jeanne, and Claire) of Winnipeg, Heather Power (married to Harold Klause) of Winnipeg and Ian Power (married to Kathy [Kendal] and niece Danica, nephew Erick) of Calgary, Alberta and by mother-in-law Pauline Nakonechny of Carman, Manitoba (originally Pine River/Dauphin), sister-in-law Ollia [Nakonechny] (married to Ted Kolsun) of St. Andrews. Delia was predeceased by her parents Parry and Frankie Power of Winnipeg and her father-in-law Nick Nakonechny.

Delia grew up in St. James in Winnipeg and attended the University of Winnipeg where she graduated a Bachelor of Science and achieved the Silver Medal for Science. Delia became a Chartered Accountant in 1975 and, with her husband, started a public accounting practice, Nakonechny and Power, Chartered Accountants, in Carman, Manitoba in 1977. Throughout the 33 years she lived in Carman, Delia was very active in the community and dedicated many hours volunteering.  She was a member of the Kinettes, was one of the founding members of WeeCareChildCenter, served as president of the Carman Skating Club, co-chaired the Carman Ducks Unlimited banquets, and spent numerous hours volunteering for other organizations.

While her children were still at home, Delia spent many happy hours cheering at baseball, hockey, ringette, rugby, and soccer games along with figure skating lessons and competitions.  She also played golf in the Tuesday daytime and evening ladies leagues, played recreational ladies ringette, and took figure skating lessons with her kids. Once her children grew up, Delia played recreational bridge through her community bridge club and recently joined ACBL and began accumulating master points.  She also took an interest in her son’s poker playing and out performed him in a qualifying tournament in Vancouver where she won a spot in the TSN Degree Poker tournament in Niagara Falls and made her national television debut.  Delia was also passionate and talented with fabric and yarn and could knit, mend, sew, and quilt as well as anyone!  Over the past number of years Delia was part of the St. Claude and Crescentwood quilting groups and made many great friends.

Although she was active in and enjoyed many activities, above all, Delia loved her grandchildren and the very special time she had with them. Her face lit up as they would update her on exciting activities at school, home or day care. She had exceptional patience as she gave them lessons in knitting and playing various new games. The grandchildren could count on having the best Halloween costumes which she would create, design and sew.

Everyone who knew Delia benefited from and will miss her joyful approach to life and her warm smile.

Thanks to Dr Woelk and the nurses and staff at BoundaryTrailsHospital for their care during the last several months; they were like family for Delia.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carman Area Foundation Box 160, Carman, MB. R0G 0J0 or a charity of your choice.

A Celebration of Life will be held on December 21, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Carman Community Hall.
