VICTOR POERSCH

On Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the age of 95, Victor decided that it was time to leave this earth and begin a new journey.

This gentle soul was predeceased by his wife Erna (1994), son Brian (1971), his parents Alexander and Julia (Gaetz), his brother Ansel and his sisters Thelma Karlowsky and Emma Grabowski. Victor is survived by his son Kenneth (Lorraine) who together gave their unmitigated love and support which enabled Papa to live in his own home until 2002 at which time the Boyne Lodge became his second home. Papa is also survived by his four granddaughters, Catherine (Kevin) Drennan of Winnipeg, Christine (Roland) Thomas of Lethbridge, Jacqueline (Ken) Burns of Winnipeg, and Colleen (Alain) Normand of Lethbridge.  Brunkild Papa as he was so affectionately called also leaves behind nine great-grandchildren who were so very lucky to know and love this wonderful man. He is survived by Jason (partner Misty), Chantal (partner Neil), Breanna (Brennen), Kyla, Kent, Joel, Joshua, Taylor and Kleighton. Victor is also survived by his brother Ginu of Nanton, AB and his sister Lily Henry of Boyne Lodge, brother-in-law Herbie Grabowski (Maude), nieces, nephews and cousins.

Victor was born in Brunkild, MB on April 18, 1915 the oldest of six children. A hardworking young man he started pulling mustard for the local farmers making around ten cents an hour. Victor then started working for the Drainage Maintenance Boards as a dragline operator and not one to sit back and relax he then went on to work at Canada Wire and Cable until his retirement. Victor's true passion in life was his accordions (about 12 in all). Victor taught himself how to play at the age of seven and he stopped playing just a few years ago. All you had to do was hum a bit of the song or tell him the name of the song and he started to play it. This brought so much joy to him since he was asked to travel all over Manitoba to play at different nursing homes, weddings and dances. When Nana and Papa came to Winnipeg for their weekly visits the accordion was in the trunk of the car just in case he needed it. In 1969, Victor was asked to make a few tape recordings of very old Polish songs complete with words and music for the National Museum in Ottawa. These tapes have been placed in the Tape Library in the Museum Archives. If you were one of the lucky ones to have known Victor you will remember the twinkle in his eye, his love for all children, that he always had candies on hand and a pen and notepad in his pocket. We love you Papa.

We would like to thank Boyne Lodge for their dedication and kindness towards Papa. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Boyne Lodge, Carman, MB R0G 0J0 or to St. Paul's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, Brunkild, MB R0G 0E0. A memorial service celebrating Papa's life will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Brunkild on Saturday, July 31 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Leslie Poulin officiating with a reception and interment to follow.
