OLLY DICK

With a mixture of joy and sorrow, we announce the passing of Olly Dick into the presence of the God she loved with all her heart, on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at the age of 92 years.

Olly was a person who loved life.  She was blessed with a cheerful and optimistic disposition.  Her loving and friendly nature gained her many friends.  She poured out her life for Rudy, her dear husband for 69 years and her six children.  She was always our cheerleader and our successes were her joy and our troubles were her concern.  She covered her family with prayer to her Heavenly Father and the effects of her life and legacy will be felt for generations to come.

Olly was born in Russia and immigrated to Canada in the mid 1920’s along with her mother, who was a widow, and her three siblings.  They settled in Winnipeg and although life was not easy in a new culture and with few resources, Olly had a happy childhood surrounded by family and friends.  She fell in love with Rudy, who became her husband in 1937.  They farmed in the Culross area of Manitoba for many years, until retirement in Carman.  Farming life was difficult at times, but Olly’s determined efforts to keep a huge garden kept her family fed.  Olly’s unconditional love and generosity created a wonderful environment for raising her family.

Church life was always important to Olly and she volunteered her gifts and time in various ways throughout her many years.  She enjoyed teaching Sunday School to the little ones.  She was never missing in the church kitchen if there was a meal to be served or dishes to be washed.  Volunteering in the MCC Thrift Store was a delight to her.  Not only was she helping others, but it was an outlet for her social personality.  She enjoyed many a laugh with her friends in the store.  Her hands were always busy knitting or sewing, either for family members or for needy people around the world.  Her heart really sang when she hosted and led Bible studies for women in her community for over twenty years.  Her influence and godly life was an inspiration to many.

Olly was predeceased by her husband, Rudy and by two children, Rudy and Betty, and three siblings, Henry Guenther, Annie Rischer and Betty Guenther.  She is survived by her children:  Werner (Hilda) of Sanford, MB; Karin (Dave) Boese of Winnipeg; Annemarie (Harry) Klassen of Toronto, ON; and John (Lorna) Dick of Toronto, ON;  two in-law children: Kathy  Swanson (Steve ) Minneapolis, MN; and Rick Janzen (Debbie) Detroit Lakes, MN; 16 grandchildren and their spouses and 37 great-grandchildren.

The family is deeply grateful to all the people who cared for our mother.  The staff at CarmanTowers and at CarmanMemorialHospital. loved our Mom and gave her compassionate care.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at 2 pm at Carman Mennonite Church, 105 Main St. N. Carman, MB ROG 0J0.  Viewing will take place at Doyle’s Funeral Chapel on Monday, July 5, 2010 from 5-7 pm.  Donations in memory of Olly Dick may be made to Carman Memorial Hospital Palliative Care, Box 610, Carman, MB or Carman Mennonite Church “Church Connection”, Box 267,  Carman, MB ROG 0J0.
