On November 21, 2009 Joe passed away peacefully on his 90th birthday.

Joe was born in Carman in 1919 but lived the majority of his school years in Winnipeg. During his youth he was a good athlete and played both Baseball and Hockey. In 1939 he joined the army and was overseas for the duration of the war. He was a tank driver and was part of the first to land at Juno Beach on D-Day. He returned to Carman in 1947 and was in the taxi business for over 25 years. In 1948 he married Jean Lenton. In 1958 he purchased the Lucky Dollar Store and over the years expanded it to Ladies Wear and then Upholstery and Draperies. In addition to this he also worked for Doyle’s Funeral Home for over 30 years.

Joe was extremely involved in the community during his life. He was on the board of the Carman Hospital for 16 years, the Co-op Board and the Youth Justice committee for 18 years. He was also involved in sports with the Recreation Commission, Hockey, but his greatest love was Baseball. He was known as "Mr. Baseball" for his years with the Carman Goldeyes and was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. He was also Carman’s Citizen of the Year in 1981.

Joe is survived by his wife of over 60 years Jean, his son Jack and wife Barb, daughter Joyce, daughter Joni and her husband Rod, and son Jeff: 7 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Eileen and husband Ken Macleod.

Funeral services will be held at the Carman United Church on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Boyne Lodge, The Carman Memorial Hospital Aux., or the Arthritis Society.
