Ben grew up near Purves with his 2 brothers and 3 sisters and attended Willowdale School and Thomas Greenway Collegiate in Crystal City.

Ben went to Winkler Bible Camp as a child where he was led to the Lord at the age of 11. This was a commitment that he lived out for the rest of his life.

Ben continued his formal education at Winkler Bible Institute and the University of Manitoba where he studied agriculture in the diploma program. After university, he farmed with his Dad and worked in Winnipeg during the winter.

As a family, we didn’t know of a special relationship in which he was involved until he admitted that two fit very well on his 900 Honda. Ben married Leila Joy Garnett on July 14, 1984. They built a house on their farm east of Purves where their family grew, as Anthony and Nicole were born in 1992. They were joined by Stephanie in 1995, and Eric in 1997. Ben and Joy and their family celebrated their 25th anniversary this summer.

Ben was a man with a servant heart. He loved children and taught Sunday school and boys’ club. He enjoyed playing games with his kids and had to tear himself away to go to work. He was the kind of man who would rather be involved in practical service and helping maintain the church building and running the sound system than sitting on a committee. He used freely his gifts of servanthood and love for people. He has been a respected member of the community as well as a good neighbour and friend to all.

He grew up on the farm and loved the way of life it provided. For more than 30 years he has farmed with his brother Harry.

He enjoyed meeting with the guys for breakfast at "Corner No Gas" in La Riviere. Also, for many years he was involved in a Tuesday morning Bible study in the "Upper Room" at Holiday Mountain during the winter months. The times of study and prayer were very special to him.

Ben left this life in a tragic farm accident on September 24, 2009. He was predeceased by his father, John Pauls in 2003, and a nephew, Donavon, in 1997. He leaves to mourn his wife, Joy; 4 children - Anthony, Nicole, Stephanie and Eric; his mother, Verna Pauls; and his siblings, Harry (Nancy), Esther Anderson (Garry), Ruth Pauls, Laura Driedger (Earl), and Ed (Leona); as well as numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.
