Marian Olga Clarke
June 23, 1914 – January 25, 2009
Marian was born on the home farm at Altamont to William and Maude king. She as educated at Deerwood and Altamont. Her mother died in 1914, and Marian and her sister, Muriel, helped their Dad raise the younger brothers, Earl and Norman. Marian entered the R.N. training program at Carman and graduated in 1940. In 1941, she married Benjamin Neufeld, who died as a prisoner of war in Hong Kong in 1944. Marian began her career at Carman, and then went on to nurse at Beinfait, Saskatchewan, and at Nelson B.C. before returning to Manitoba’s Deerlodge Veteran’s Hospital in Winnipeg. It was at Deerlodge where she met a handsome RCAF veteran, Arthur Clarke, who she married in 1948. They lived in Winnipeg and Saskatoon where Art was employed with Canadian National Railway, and retired to Victoria, B.C. in 1972 where they spent many happy years, and especially enjoyed taking visitors to High Tea at the Empress Hotel. Marian was a prolific, skilled master craft person whose creations will be forever cherished by her family. After Art died in 1996, Marian returned to Manitoba, and in 1998 the Boyne Lodge in Carman became her new home. The family wishes to thank the Boyne Lodge staff and volunteers for the many years of friendship, and excellent care.
Marian was predeceased by her parents, her brother Earl in Italy in 1944, her brother Norman in 1983, and her sister Muriel (Warder) Orchard in 1975. She is survived by her niece Gail (Richard) Snider, and her nephew Donald (Janie) Orchard, as well as 6 great nieces and nephews, and 7 great-great nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Doyle’s Funeral Home in Carman, Manitoba at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2009. Donations may be made to the Boyne Lodge in Carman, Manitoba.
