RUBY CLAIR GRAY

nee WORKMAN

After a passionate lifetime journey, Ruby passed away quietly in her sleep Friday, July 25, 2008 at the Boyne Lodge in Carman MB.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son Fred (Bertie), daughter Carrol (Andy), grandchildren Wanda (Gary), John (Karen), Heather (Bob), David (Lisa), great grandchildren Lynley, Arin, Mackenzie, Dayne, Meghan and sister Hazel of Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Ruby was born February 17, 1911 in Solsgirth MB. She was predeceased by her parents, Louisa nee Finan and John Workman, her husband Knox, her brothers Gordon and Lloyd, and her sisters Mary and Mabel.

Her spiritual and musical journey began when she arrived on the scene and continued through her life. Ruby was born into a very musical family. At 14 she began playing the ancient pump organ. During school she also played the cornet in a band. Ruby’s journey playing the church organ spanned various Anglican churches for 59 years. At the young age of 88 she retired saying "I still love to play but my eyesight isn’t as good as it should be."

Her marriage journey with her schoolmate Knox began in 1936. They farmed for a couple of years before moving to Brandon and then in 1942, Knox and Ruby, with Fred and Carrol moved to Graysville. In 1985 Ruby and Knox built their retirement home in Carman which became home until Ruby’s passing.

Ruby’s career journey began in 1929 when she attended Normal School in Brandon. In 1930, she began teaching in Landsburn, then, continued in Graysville. Ruby taught for 34 years, retiring in 1973. In May 2002 Ruby became the first recipient of a Lifetime Member of the Retired Teachers Association of Manitoba and was presented with a Life Membership from the Boyne Chapter of Retired Teachers. This was a direct reflection of her life long passion for education.

Ruby’s family wish to thank the staff at the Boyne Towers and the Lodge, her many friends and the doctors and nurses for their outstanding care and compassion.

A memorial service celebrating Ruby’s life will be held on Monday, July 28, 2008 at 11:00 a.m.
