Dad was born in Hepburn, Saskatchewan to Wilhelm W. and Agatha Born. The family returned to Manitoba shortly after Dad’s birth settling in the Myrtle area, where he spent his childhood and teenage years. In 1943 he enlisted with the Canadian Forces serving in Canada and overseas for 2 ½ years. On his return he married the love of his life Mary Dyck. Dad and Mom began their life together as farmers in the Kane Manitoba area. All three children were born here. To support a growing family they moved to a larger farm at Sewell, Manitoba in 1955. In 1966 they made the move to Newdale Manitoba. After 43 years of running a successful farming operation they retired to Carman Manitoba in 1978. It was here in 1984 that Dad upon his confession of faith was baptised at the Carman Mennonite Church.

Over the years Dad held various positions in the communities they lived in from trustee in the local school divisions to secretary of the local Manitoba Pool Elevator boards.

Dad’s love, next to Mom and their family, was the soil. Despite the ups and downs of farming, he never lost that love of nurturing growth. He had a passion for planting trees. Each of his farm yards displayed the many trees he planted. Each of his children has had yards that have included plantings done by Dad. A garden was always a must. The last garden he planted and maintained was the summer of 2007. Along with his trees and garden, he needed flowers. Growing roses was his love, especially when he was able to cut them and bring them in to Mom.

Services will be held Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Carman Mennonite Church, with Pastor Bob Pauls officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Greenwood Cemetery, Carman, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dad’s name to Gideons International of Canada or Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

The family would like to thank the Carman Memorial Hospital nursing and support staff for all the care and compassion that they gave to Dad during his six month stay. A special thank you to Pastor Bob Pauls, the congregation of the Carman Mennonite Church, neighbours, relatives and friends for all the food, visits, prayers and words of hope and encouragement.
