With love and sadness in our hearts, we announce the passing of James Robert, aged 78 on Monday, January 22, 2007 at the Carman Memorial Hospital. 

Jim was born in Miami on February 24, 1928 to Robert and Lillian Thomson. He grew up along with six sisters. After schooling, Jim went to work for Leather’s General Store for many years. He then went to work for his best friend Garney Kissick, driving a gravel truck. Along with farming he held numerous seasonal jobs. In September 1954, Jim married Shirley Rutter. They lived in Miami for 51 years where they worked and raised their three children. Jim played hockey with the Miami Hockey club for many years. This passion for hockey carried forward to his own children and later his grandchildren. He also enjoyed curling, hunting, fishing and camping. In October 2005, Jim and Shirley moved to Carman.

Jim is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley, and children, Murray (Colleen), Sharon (Michael) Forgala, and Brian (Lisa); grandchildren, Shayne, Connor, and Stacey Thomson, Sarah Smith, Kristin and Leslie Forgala, Dustin, Mitchell and Jordan Thomson. He is also survived by sisters, Enid Gibbings, Donna Freeman, June Newsom, and Mary Ann Monkman as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Robert and Lillian, infant daughter Sherri-Lynn, and sisters Marion Grogan and Shirley Newsom.

Jim’s memorial service was held on Friday, January 26, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Miami Community Hall, Miami, MB. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Jim’s memory to the Carman Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Unit, Box 610, Carman, Manitoba, R0G 0J0.
