Marie Thiessen Stoesz

nee Giesbrecht

Marie was born March 8, 1917, the third child of Cornelius and Aganetha Giesbrecht. She attended Steinreich and Bergfeld Schools. At age 13, she went to work as domestic help in Brunkild and later, in Winnipeg. Marie was married to Bill Thiessen on October 27, 1940 at the Giesbrecht farm at Homewood. After living in various locations for three years, they bought a farm at Graysville and farmed there from 1943 to 1970. In 1970 they moved to Carman. Mom worked in the laundry at the Carman Memorial Hospital for eleven years. After her retirement, Mom loved to make quilts for family and M.C.C. as well as making many jean blankets, and working at the MCC store as a volunteer as well as traveling with Dad to conferences and going on bus tours. Mom was also a devoted caregiver, first to her ailing parents, then her older sister, and then to Dad after his stroke in August of 1988. She cared for him until January of 1997 when it became too hard for her to do so any more. After Dad’s passing in October, 1977, Mom filled her time with visiting friends and neighbors, sewing and mending for the Carman Hospital Auxiliary, helping with projects taken on by the Women in Mission group at church, doing jigsaw puzzles, and playing table games with her many friends and family. She married Bill Stoesz on February 2, 2002 and they enjoyed five good years. But eventually, age and health took their toll. Early this year, she started mentioning the pain in her abdomen. Doctors were consulted, tests were done, and in May, the verdict of “cancer” was delivered. On June 9th she was admitted to Carman Hospital. She gradually became weaker and slipped away quietly to be with her Lord at 6:20 on July 18th with family at her side. She leaves to mourn her husband Bill Stoesz as well as two daughters, one son and their families, as well as three step-daughters and one step-son and their families. Also left to mourn are three sisters: Trudy Unrau, Annie Loewen, Tina (Henry) Stoesz, one sister-in-law Ruth Giesbrecht, one brother-in-law George Hamm, and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her first husband, Bill Thiessen in 1997, by her parents Cornelius and Aganetha Giesbrecht, four sisters, Nettie Klassen, Susie Derksen, Hilda Hamm, and Margaret Brown, as well as one brother, Ed Giesbrecht, two great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter in infancy. Funeral service was held on Monday, July 23, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Carman Mennonite Church with Pastor Bob Pauls officiating. Interment will took place at Greenwood Cemetery, Carman. Viewing was held at Doyle’s Funeral Chapel on Sunday July 22, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. and at the church prior to the service. Memorial donations may be made to MCC 134 Plaza Drive Winnipeg, MB, R3T 5K9 or to Canadian Sunday School Missions.
