Katie Friesen

April 18, 1910 ~ September 6, 2007

Peacefully, on Thursday, September 6, 2007, Katie Friesen, aged 97 years, of Salem Nursing Home, Winkler, formerly of Carman and Roseisle, passed into eternity.

Katie was born April 18, 1910 in Gregorvika, Ukraine, Russia. She was predeceased by her husband, John B. Friesen, one daughter, one granddaughter, two sons-in-law, one brother, two sisters and several step and half siblings.

In 1927 Katie immigrated to Canada with her stepmother and family. She worked as a domestic in Winnipeg for several years. When the family she worked for moved to B.C. the sent her train fair to come work there as well. While in B.C. she was reunited with John Friesen and they were married October 28, 1934 in B.C. They moved back to Manitoba to work for Katie’s Aunt Nettie and Uncle Otto Benke in Holland, MB. In 1939 they moved to Miami, later to Stephenfield, then in 1941 bought a farm in Roseisle. Katie enjoyed working outside, helping with chores, fieldwork, and tending a large garden. She was always busy with her hands, sewing, knitting, making patch-work quilts, and tiny doll cloths for her daughters and later granddaughters. In 1970 the farm was sold and our parents retired to Carman where they enjoyed their small home and large apple orchard and garden. In 1992 they moved to Park Manor Seniors Home and in 1997 when dad needed to be placed in Boyne Lodge, Mom moved to Boyne Towers where she continued to be busy with her hands making covered hangers and knitting dishcloths. In 2004 Mom had a bad fall injuring her head. She was hospitalized, remaining in hospital for a year and a half before placement in Salem Nursing Home, Winkler in 2006.

Katie leaves to cherish her memories, one son John (Joyce) Friesen of Calgary, AB, four daughters, Tena Froebe of Carman, Mary Anne Hildebrand of Steinbach, Linda (Bill) Warrener of Baldur, and Rita (Steve) Rabski of Calgary, AB. She will also be missed by her 12 grandchildren and their spouses, 21 great-grandchildren, and a special friend, Georgette Enns.

The family would like to thank the staff and care givers at Carman Hospital and Salem Home for their compassion and care given to our mother.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Carman Mennonite Church with Pastor Bob Pauls officiating.
