Mary Becker
1915 – 2006
On Saturday, August 5, following a brief illness, Mary passed away peacefully at Pinawa Hospital. Mary was born in Withernsea, Yorkshire, England on March 31, 1915. She met her husband Roy, a Canadian soldier, during WWII while he was stationed in Britain and she was working in the NAAFI. They married in September 1943, and as a war bride, along with her infant son, Mary immigrated to Canada in April 1946 aboard the Queen Mary. She and Roy had a second son in 1948 and until the early 80’s farmed in Elm Creek, Manitoba. Mary enjoyed gardening, flowers, curling, fishing trips in the motor home, and a good game of cards. When Roy died in 1986 she relocated in Lac du Bonnet closer to family. There she continued an active life as a member of the Pioneer Club participating in floor curling and cards. Besides Roy, Mary was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters in Yorkshire. She leaves to cherish her memory sons Robert (Steva) and David (Cathy), five grandsons Chris (Jillian) Cameron, Craig, Michael (Barb), and Chad (Luwan); as well as a granddaughter Jessica (Dean) and three great granddaughters Emily, Nichole, and Chantal. Mary is also survived by nephews Pete and Tony and nieces Jill (Geoff) and Christine (Nick) in Yorkshire. Mary will be greatly missed by those who loved her, particularly her grandchildren with whom she had close bonds. We take comfort knowing she is finally reunited with her beloved Roy. Interment will be in Elm Creek Cemetery on Sunday August 13, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Monday August 14, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church in Lac du Bonnet. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB. R3C 2B7 or to the Alzheimer Society, 10-120 Donald St. Winnipeg, MB. R3C 4G2.
